Wildlife Rehabilitation

Never jeopardize your own safety or the safety of others. hawk in cageBefore handling any wildlife, keep in mind that wildlife appearing to be abandoned, orphaned, injured or sick may indeed not be.  If you find a wild animal that appears to be in need of assistance, please call us for advice before handling the animal.

In conjunction with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, the animal care specialists of the Dane County Humane Society and local wildlife rehabilitators, the ECA provides emergency and rehabilitation services for wildlife. Dr. Koeppl and the senior technicians are state and federally licensed wildlife rehabilitators; they maintain a network of associates to provide rehabilitation and release as indicated. A large number of rehabilitation pens and flight cages are maintained for this purpose.

We see a large variety of local wildlife. Some of the most commonly presented wildlife include the following:

  • Opossums
  • Hawks
  • Owls
  • Variety of birds feeding squirrel
  • Rabbits
  • Ducks
  • Geese
  • Reptiles
  • Amphibians
Some of the types of care we provide to these animals include:
  • Repairing fractured wings and legs
  • Repairing fractured turtle shells
  • Nutritional strengthening
  • Medication administration
  • Oxygen administration
  • TLC in a 24/7 temperature-controlled environment during their rehabilitation

Taking possession of and/or harboring a wild animal is illegal unless you are a licensed rehabilitator!
